Press Release -- mental images GmbH
mental images Acquires Cycore Cult3D Technology
BERLIN, Germany and UPPSALA, Sweden (Mar. 01, 2004) -- mental images and Cycore today announced the acquisition by mental images of Cult3D, Cycore's leading interactive 3D software platform for e-business, and all related 3D technology from Cycore. This deal is significant because it will drive widespread adoption and deployment of 3D technology for the Internet.
Cult3D is a 3D software application that brings interactive 3D to mainstream devices like PCs, and handheld devices like PDAs and cell phones, regardless of their processing power and graphics capabilities. It is currently used by thousands of Web sites with over 10,000 models in circulation. Customers include major car manufacturers, TV stations, and world leading mobile telephone manufacturers. Advertisement
Cult3D will be integrated into mental images's RealityServer(R), a secure, server-based collaboration platform for industries that require the remote collaborative creation, interaction with and visualization of 3D content. Cult3D will complement RealityServer's existing technology. The resulting RealityServer Version 1.5 will be made commercially available in the fourth quarter of 2004. It will provide real time interaction on any device with 3D data of reduced complexity. These are automatically derived from the original CAD or design data contained in the RealityServer database. Users can effortlessly manipulate such light-weight representation of complex 3D content for the creation of photorealistic images of the highest quality from the original data.
With the new solution, installation, maintenance and repair tasks for complex industrial products such as aircrafts can be accomplished with the help of a light-weight, wireless device with a display that allows a service technician or even a consumer to remotely interact with the original 3D data on the RealityServer for any part or assembly of parts of the product and to obtain all information about the process of installing or disassembling and reassembling them for troubleshooting, repair and replacement as well as the relevant data base information about these components and their functionality. If required, a service technician or consumer can obtain help from an expert in a joint collaborative session looking at the same data, where the expert now manipulates the 3D data interactively to demonstrate the tasks to be performed to install, maintain, or repair the product. (The expert and the technician can talk to each other at the same time via the Internet or regular cell phones). Similarly, an automobile manufacturer could, for instance, offer potential customers a car configurator with interactive 3D models based on the original computer-aided design, or CAD, data. As customers choose views to look at the car and options, like color, trim, etc., the car models change instantly. As soon as the interaction stops, a photo-realistic, personalized image is generated on the server from the original data, maintaining highest fidelity to the actual product while keeping the original product data securely on the server. This allows a customer to do get an impression of the car matching reality as closely as possible. Following final review of these images as well as of any relevant database information regarding the chosen configuration, an order can be placed and sent directly to the manufacturer's scheduling system. In another scenario, RealityServer with Cult3D technology could be used to deploy personalized multi-player online games. Since most or all computing and image-generation is done on the server, this is an ideal infrastructure for "light-client" solutions, based on cell phones and connected personal digital assistants, or PDAs.
Other applications for the technology include remote collaborative training and teaching, collaborative design and engineering, collaborative medical diagnosis and surgery planning, oil and gas exploration, and other data analysis and visualization applications, and broad-band based, interactive on-line entertainment applications such as (single- and multi-user) games with visually extremely rich, photo-realistic content
"The full integration of Cult3D into RealityServer, something that could only be done by mental images, will allow us to better serve our partners and customers worldwide by implementing customized RealityServer based applications for them," said Jerry Pettersson, CEO of Cycore. "The integration of our 3D technology adds a proven 3D web content authoring solution and a widely deployable real time interactive client based visualization component to the collaborative server based functionality of RealityServer."
Under the terms of the agreement, mental images acquires the source code and all rights to Cult3D and all related 3D technology and Cycore becomes a shareholder in mental images. Additionally, the entire Cult3D development team will join mental images as part of the company's office in Stockholm, Sweden. Cycore will continue to provide support to its existing Cult3D customers and business partners, and become a premier value added system integrator for RealityServer solutions worldwide.
"The integration of Cycore's technology into mental images's RealityServer will allow us to provide the most comprehensive, versatile, scalable and powerful software platform for the creation and deployment of web and WLAN based, collaborative 3D applications and 3D application services," said Rolf Herken, President, CEO and CTO of mental images. "Cycore's decision to base their future business on the utilization of this platform further proves that RealityServer is the platform of choice for satisfying the needs of any customers that require such applications and application services."
To date, mental images's patented technologies and products are distributed primarily as the integrated rendering and (in some cases) modeling software components of leading digital content creation and CAD programs such as Alias' Maya(R), Softimage's Softimage(R)|XSI(TM), discreet's 3ds max(R) and 3ds viz, SolidWorks' SolidWorks(R) and Dassault Systemes' CATIA(R). Alias, an SGI company; Dassault Systemes, SA, discreet, a division of Autodesk, Inc.; SolidWorks, a wholly owned company of Dassault Systemes, and Softimage, a wholly owned company of Avid Technology also sell a standalone version of mental ray(R), mental images's Academy Award(R)-winning rendering software
About RealityServer
RealityServer is mental images's new product that enables interactive manipulation and visualization of existing and newly created 3D content. RealityServer based applications permit thousands of users to simultaneously and optionally collaboratively access and interact with original 3D data. Since the original content remains on the server, access to data and user policies are easily secured and managed centrally. This benefit is especially important for industries that will increasingly rely on interactive collaboration but have a strong interest in maintaining control over their core data. Industries that stand to benefit from RealityServer include: remote maintenance and repair; online training and product support; collaborative product design and content creation; medical imaging; simulation and geophysical data analysis; defense and intelligence applications; interactive online gaming/entertainment; and e-Commerce.

This sample, including HTML and CO files shows how to setup a Cult object for scripting, and it uses Triggers and Send Message to Host. It also uses Expressions to control that each button only can be clicked once, until they've been Reset. This is a good example of a standard setup that works both crossplatform and crossbrowser.

Hello All,
I would like to inform you that as of today, Cycore has released the new and improved Cult3D Designer 5.3 and an exporter for Discreet's plasma software. In addition, the Cult3D 3ds max exporter now officially supports 3ds max R5. You can go to www.cult3d.com and download the new software. The new and improved Cult3D Designer 5.3 includes updates to current features, improvements to current functionality and a list of new features have also been added.
Cult3D Designer 5.3 contains built in support for the ColorCode 3-D™ technology, where Cult3D objects can now be viewed in high quality 3D Stereo, adding true depth and perspective to Cult3D's visual and interactive realism. By using the ColorCode 3-D™ technology, Cult3D 5.3 has been enhanced with 3D Stereo that can be easily applied to any Cult3D object, without sacrificing visual quality, animations, interactivity or any other Cult3D feature. Resulting objects can be viewed with inexpensive ColorCodeViewerú, paper glasses specially designed with amber and blue filters.
In addition to improvements to current functionality, new features such as Collision Detection and Walkthrough Navigation are especially useful in architectural applications of the Cult3D technology. An Extended Arcball function has also been added to allow for customization of arcball behaviour, such as limited rotations. Progressive Antialiasing in Cult3D object creation will increase visual realism without compromising the object's responsiveness to user interaction.
Other features include Customizable compression, Multiple selection, Event Map helpers, Metrics, Resize/Center tool, Show/Hide Objects in Designer, project creation Wizard, Workbench Window, extended Java API and improved hardware support for bump mapping. We hope you enjoy our latest releases and look forward to your feedback! thanks, Nils

World of 3D Newsflash
Cycore is pleased to announce the 2nd annual World of 3D Modelling Competition, from June 10th to August 1st, 2002. Hosted by Cycore's World of 3D community website, http://www.worldof3d.com and sponsored by Nvidia, this year's competition is open to Cult3D modellers worldwide.
Nvidia will contribute one Quadro Pro and one GeForce4 graphic card to the competition and will also publish the winning presentations on their website.
This year's competition will feature two categories; Java-based models and non-Java based models. Submissions can be stand-alone .CO files, .CO files integrated into HTML pages or .CO HTML pages that feature Flash integration--presentation format is entirely up to the artist. The ten finalists from each category will be awarded a Cycore Cult3D non-commercial license. The judges will then select an overall winner in each category for the graphics cards (a coin toss will be held to determine which winner receives which card).
Experts from Cycore and Nvidia will judge each submission on a standard nVidia GeForce4-equipped PC, based on the following: - Modelling complexity - File size - Interactivity - Cross platform support (For HTML page presentations)
The only criteria for submission is that the presentation must never have been published on World of 3D or any other public website before entering the competition. All submissions must be emailed to competition@worldof3d.com in a ZIP archive, including clear English instructions on how to operate the presentation. The contest will close at 9.00a.m. August 2nd CET (Central European Time) and winners will be announced on August 15th.
Cycore employees and their family members are prohibited from entering the competition. Cycore and nVidia reserve the right to publish and promote the winning presentations without restriction. The judges decision cannot be appealed.

Hello Community Members!
As you may have noticed, the Cycore team hasn't been very active in World of 3D lately. The reason for this is that we have been extremely busy with the development of the Cult3D product line-to continue offering you, our developers, the top-notch products you have come to expect from Cycore. We are now entirely focused on improving everything from software to manuals and, of course, tutorials for future Cult3D Designer Packs.
We are continually impressed with the development that comes from the community and hope that you will put some of your discoveries and expertise into a Tutorial that we can post on Wof3D. We will be relying on you, the community, to share your tips and tricks with fellow Cult3D users. If you have a tutorial to contribute, please send all the necessary files in a ZIP archive and e-mail it to me, nils@cycore.com, I'll make it available for download under the Tutorials section. The preferred format is PDF. Cycore's contribution to WO3D will center on better presence in the forums, and a renewed commitment to adding news and gallery items more regularly.
And don't forget that the Wof3D community is also meant to be partly "user driven", which means that it's important that YOU are active too. A community with many active users attracts new users, which will lead to a site jam-packed with the kind of resources and timely information everyone can benefit from.
Together, we can make World of 3D the leading source for 'everything Cult3D'. Without your active participation, there would be no community.

Merry christmas everyone from us behind wo3d. The updates has not been as frequent as I'd to liked the last couple of months. This is due to a number of reasons, one is that I have gone back to do modeling again, and its been taking 120% of my time, hopefully this will change in the beginning of the next year. I would like to thank everyone for this year, it's been a great year for us and wo3d, with a new design, which has IMHO worked out very well. There are several updates that are on my 'todo' list, so those of you who waits for something, please have patience, I have not forgotten you! Last but not least, I have (as usual) recieved a holiday greeting from Florin Miu. Check it out in the gallery. Merry christmas everyone and see you next year!

Two new Netscape 4.x plugins are now available for download on the site.
This beta version (v5.2b1) mostly corrects some installation problems. (Note that it is not yet compatible with Netscape 6 / Mozilla)
The RedHat .rpm package is not affected by this release

The Designer extension, written by Florin Miu, is now updated. It had a bug in the installation program which is now fixed. With the extension you can change texture and colors of objects without any java knowledge, I strongly recommend everyone to try it out.

Finally the promised update of design and content of wo3d has been made.I know, I know, it took way too long time. As you probably can see a lot of things has a new look to it, but I am sure regular users will find their way around pretty quick.
We have many plans for the site down the road and many interesting things are coming up, however we would really like to hear your opinion what YOU want to see here, we are thinking more contests, an open chatroom session once a week etc, what do you think?
We would also like to encourage you to submit your work, if you've made a really cool Cult3D object that you want to show, maybe you have some cool tricks you would like to contribute, write a tutorial, or a document on how you did it. Good and informative tutorials/documents will be rewarded.
As always, let us know what you think of the site, new design, content on the site etc.
